How to Manually Connect a Third-Party Domain to Shopify

If you're looking to integrate your third-party domain with Shopify, you'll need to handle the process yourself since Shopify Support cannot access your domain provider's settings. Should you encounter any difficulties, your domain provider will be your go-to resource for assistance. Shopify Support can, however, guide you on the details you’ll need to share with your provider. This guide walks you through the steps to connect your domain manually.

Before You Start

To successfully link your domain to Shopify, gather the following essentials:

  • Login credentials for your third-party domain provider account
  • Your domain provider’s specific requirements
  • Shopify’s IPv4 address: 23.227.38.65
  • Shopify’s IPv6 address: 2620:0127:f00f:5:: (or the expanded version 2620:0127:f00f:0005:0000:0000:0000:0000 if the condensed version isn’t accepted)
  • The www CNAME record: shops.myshopify.com.

Keep in mind that your domain can only have one A record and one www CNAME record. If these already exist, you’ll need to update them to point to Shopify. You can have multiple CNAME records, but each must have a unique name (e.g., www or shop).

Step 1: Update DNS Records with Your Domain Provider

  1. Log in to your domain provider’s website.
  2. Navigate to the DNS settings or domain management section.
  3. Modify the following records:
    • Set the A record to Shopify’s IPv4 address: 23.227.38.65. Use the @ symbol as the host name if required.
    • Remove any additional A records tied to the domain.
    • Set the AAAA record to Shopify’s IPv6 address: 2620:0127:f00f:5::. Use the @ symbol as the host name if needed.
    • Delete any other AAAA records present.
    • Configure the CNAME record named www to point to shops.myshopify.com. (don’t forget the trailing period).
  4. Save your changes. Stick with the default TTL (Time to Live) value unless instructed otherwise.

Step 2: Link Your Domain to Shopify

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin panel and go to Settings > Domains.
  2. Select Connect existing domain.
  3. Enter your domain (e.g., johns-apparel.info) in the Domain field and click Next.
  4. Hit Connect domain.
  5. Allow up to 48 hours for verification. Once completed, your domain will appear under the Domains section with a Connected status.

What’s Next?

After connecting, Shopify assigns the best IP address for your region. While 23.227.38.65 is the default A record, you might see a variation like 23.227.38.32 depending on your location—this is normal and won’t affect your setup.

If you see a message like “This domain is already connected to another Shopify store”, you’ll need to verify ownership. Check Shopify’s troubleshooting resources for help with domain issues.
